United are on the verge of signing Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana, a player so highly rated for his modern traits and abilities.
With a fee around 50 – 60 million pounds being rumoured, many expect the keeper to take instantly to Premier League action.
As a player that Ten Hag has worked with in the past, it is undeniably worth taking a look at the value and quality that Andre Onana could bring to this United side.

Onana is regarded for being insanely confident on the ball.
He sweeps extremely high up the pitch and looks comfortable doing it.
The kind of confidence that we have not seen in years from David De Gea.
Contrary to De Gea, Onana’s distribution would allow United to play through the press rather than over it (this being an issue last season that caused us a lot of defensive issues).

While being quality on the ball is an exceptional quality to have, shot-stopping is a goalkeeper’s bread and butter.
Over the last year, Onana averaged a save percentage of 76.4% – putting him in the 88th percentile of European keepers.
He has as goals against p90 of 0.95 – putting him in the 85th percentile.
8 clean sheets from 13 Champions League games (highest) while also making the highest saves (47) in the competition.
Confidence
Onana’s confidence is admirable.
He demands respect, he is notorious for his confidence and his teammates trust him.
He is known for being a bit on the mad side – often taking insane risks and sweeping up very high.
Confident on set pieces – claims crosses exceptionally well.
He thrives off high pressure situations and has no problem displaying aggression as and when it is required of him.
These qualities are arguably necessary for a United player, and being different has made many players legends at the club.
Pedigree
Onana joins United having played for some of Europe’s most prestigious clubs, including Barcelona, Ajax and Inter Milan.
Big game experience
There is plenty of evidence to show that Onana has been exceptional at each club he has played at, further evidencing that the shirt of a massive club shouldn’t weigh too heavily.
Should the transfer go through, Onana would join a long list of names who have worn the number 1 at United and his bags of European experience will help him adjust to life in Manchester.
Improvement across the pitch – A new era
He is a keeper that Ten Hag has dreamed of since joining United.
With De Gea leaving, it finally marks a post-Sir Alex era, 10 years after he left the club.
Proven he can play in dominant possession-based sides with Ajax and Inter.
Could unlock United’s ability to play out from the back.
He is used to playing behind centre halves with quality ball playing ability, working with Daley Blind, Milan Skriniar and our own Lisandro Martinez.
For our defenders, having a goalkeeper behind them like Onana will allow them to trust more, allowing for more calculated risks that could result in goals.

For a younger generation – a lot of United fans struggle to remember an era without De Gea as our number 1 – and this makes a quality keeper signing unfamiliar territory for the longest time.
As this transfer looks closer by the minute, Andre Onana’s stand-out qualities could undoubtedly improve United and push us on by strides.
Onana’s signing could push us to concede less goals on average – and in those games where we’ve struggled in the past against proficient set pieces – his confidence and ability could win us points.
